Thanks to Laura of ErgoBaby and Alex of Beco (I’m imagining fanfare and heraldry), I’m going to talk my head off at the Babywearing 101 class at MommyCon this coming Saturday, March 21. Let’s see how much information I can spit out in less than an hour!
I’m looking forward to joining Bayou City Mamas again to talk about babywearing and focus on soft structured carriers: 7 p.m. Wednesday, March at Babies ‘R Us (9730 Katy Freeway, Houston TX). I think the VIP ticket ($55) is an incredible value, if you’re interested in buying a soft structured (backpack-style) carrier. I understand there are a limited number of these. The class itself, which also includes a meal, is $15.
This year, I’ve joined the staff of Brilliantly Baby to offer a Babywearing Basics class on the first Saturday each month from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at their office just near Gessner and I-10, across the highway from Memorial City Mall. The cost is $35 per couple or $25 per person. Please visit the Brilliantly Baby site and click on the link in the calendar to register.
I cover best practices for safety and optimal body positioning and explain why those choices make sense. I also demonstrate how to use the major types of carriers available on the market and review their possible benefits and drawbacks.
Since the first time I met the company’s founders, I was impressed with their professionalism, experience, and passion. We also have in common a desire to present common-sense information that is medically sound in a way that empowers families.
I hope you’ll join me or send a friend you think would enjoy the class.
I will be hosting training sessions for Babywearing International of Greater Houston (BWIGH) and invite educators (current and future) to challenge me to improve my teaching skills while helping you improve yours.
… whose class is officially announced!
I’m excited to be taking BI traveling, this time to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — at The Changing Table — for both the Basic (Saturday and Sunday, February 15 and 16) and Advanced (Monday and Tuesday, February 17 and 18) classes in one four-day session.
This session will cost $50 for registration, $300 in tuition per level (most plan to take both Basic and Advanced), and $30 travel costs, for a total of $680. For more information about classes and fees, please visit this information page.
Registration closes January 20, 2014. Class is limited to ten students.
If you are interested, please request to join the Facebook group for this session. All may join the group, but once the enrollment is finalized, all others will be asked to leave the group, so that the students may enjoy a confidential environment to support their learning and certification process.
I want to thank St. Paul’s School for graciously hosting a new meeting time for Babywearing International of Greater Houston, for whom I am an educator: fourth Friday mornings. So far, we will mutually try out the 10 a.m. to noon slot on January 24, February 28, March 28, April 25, and May 23. If it works well for the school, BWIGH, and our staff and community, we hope to extend the collaboration.
Also exciting: I’ll be teaching for St. Paul’s Parent Education Program on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. on “Carrying Children with Simple Pieces of Cloth: Introduction to Babywearing.” Their programs are open to the public, and they offer child care, though reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance through the school office. Even if you cannot attend my class, please consider reading through the program (via the link above) to see if any of the other topics or speakers interest you.
For this class, I’ll discuss the fundamentals listed below and leave some time for questions. I don’t plan on doing a lot of one-on-one for the class, but I will provide information on how to get that help (like at BWIGH meetings!).
- Reasons to use cloth slings (biological norm to keep babies close; supporting social, emotional, and physical development; inclusion of infant; balance and maintenance of family members’ needs),
- Major types of carriers in the context of human culture (simple pieces of cloth; panel-based carriers; harness-style and framed carriers; carry assistants; and devices like car seats, bouncers, swings, and strollers)
- Considerations in selecting a good carrier or carrying style for the family (safety, comfort, optimal or ideal positioning, needs and goals)
- Finding ongoing support (online and in person)
Come see me, or send a friend!
In response to the great interest in the certification class I’m teaching August 16-19, I’ll be offering the classes again this fall. I will be traveling to Oklahoma to teach a combined session (Basic and Advanced together) in February 2014 and will work on 2014 class dates once those are finalized.
September 21 and 22 (registration deadline August 31)
October 19 and 20 (registration deadline September 28)
November 16-17 (registration deadline (October 26)
Classes prepare students to complete the certification process through Babywearing Institute. Nonrefundable registration is $50 per student. Tuition (refundable and transferrable to other sessions) for each class is $300, and if a student opts to register for both a basic and advanced class, registration will only need to be paid once. Students who have previously taken a class with me may, on a case-by-case basis, request to audit a session corresponding to a course they have already taken. A Basic course is a prerequisite for the Advanced course. Those who have taken a BI class and wish to audit or review materials with other teachers should contact me for special arrangements. Nurslings are welcome, and older children are permitted with the understanding that their guardian is responsible for helping set expectations for behavior that maintain an environment conducive for learning.
Classes will be held at 2028 Buffalo Terrace, Houston, Texas 77019-2408. They will run 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a break for lunch to be determined by those in attendance that day. The location is close to several food options, and a small refrigerator is available for those who wish to bring their own lunch. Ample free parking is available across the street from the office building.
I will begin offering noncertification courses in 2014 on specific topics, in addition to the private consultation and small-group clases I currertly offer. If you do not require certification but wish to deepen your knowledge, these may be a better, lower-priced option. All Babywearing International VBEs and volunteers will receive a 25 percent discount on non-certification courses I offer.
Over the next month, I should be fleshing out this website to provide a FAQ about classes and the certification process. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me with your questions.
